The Winterberger Hochtour Trail - hiking at towering heights
The Winterberger Hochtour Trail is an 82 kilometre circular route through every district of the town of Winterberg. The holiday paradise in the Hochsauerland area flaunts its best side to hikers.
The town of Winterberg lends its name to the trail. The destination is a popular winter sports resort and is now known as the spot with the most guaranteed snow in North Rhine-Westphalia. The hiking paths around Winterberg are open all year round. On our hike on the Winterberger Hochtour Trail, we cross four mountains above 800 metres in height, including the most famous mountain in the Sauerland region: the Kahler Asten. On this trail, we enjoy expansive views of the many upland pastures as well as paths through dense, fragrant spruce forests. Other highlights on the route include source regions, fountains, wayside crosses and historic boundary stones.
TIP: Asten Tower
Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:
"We enjoy spectacular views from Asten Tower. I recommend stopping off at the tower's restaurant and drinking a refreshing beer brewed in the Sauerland. The region is home to a number of popular German beers."
