High-quality cycle routes, bike-friendly accommodation and outstanding natural and cultural attractions invite you to enjoy an action-packed stay.
Chiemsee-Chiemgau: around the 'Bavarian Sea'
The contrast between Chiemgau's picturesque lakes and alpine landscapes not only provides postcard-worthy scenery but also routes to suit every taste and fitness level: road cyclists, hobby cyclists and handbikers will find their perfect route on the 1,400-kilometre network of trails; mountain bikers can let off steam over 600 kilometres. The 60-kilometre-long Chiemsee cycle path around the Bavarian Sea is a classic, as are the 20 themed routes , like the 16 Lake tour, the archaeological circular route or the Farm Safari. Physical wellbeing is the focus of these delicacy and brewery-orientated routes.
Uelzen heath region: enjoying nature and blossoms
Every year in August and September, the Uelzen heath region is transformed into a sea of bright purple flowers – the most beautiful time to set off on one of the 40 or so themed bike routes. Enjoying nature is the top priority, for example on the 'Garden of 800 Trees' circular route in Melzingen, or on a visit to the Ellerndorf juniper heath, home to a shepherd with his herd of heather sheep. With its historic mills, museums and stone churches, the heath region is also rich with culture. Don't miss out on a visit to the famous Hundertwasser train station in Uelzen!
Inn-Salzach: rivers, castles and breweries
Numerous rivers and lakes characterise the Inn-Salzach region in Upper Bavaria. Along its banks, cyclists can discover lively towns, historic monasteries and castles on a route network of around 1,500 kilometres, including what is probably the longest castle complex in the world in Burghausen, and the pilgrimage site in Altötting. Those interested in culture can cycle through six cities on the 'ArchitekTour', one of 24 themed routes, and the more sports-inclined may enjoy the 'Strampelstrecke'. Of course, culinary delights also play a role: the region is home to plenty of beer gardens and a dozen breweries. A trip across the river Inn on the historic ferry near Mühldorf is an extraordinary experience, and you can take your bike on board.
Württemberg Allgäu: natural treasures at the foot of the Alps
The Alps on the horizon, Lake Constance not far away, the landscape a romantic combination of green hills and orchards, wetlands, forests and lakes: the Württemberg Allgäu region is known as a 'natural treasure trove' for good reason, and is accessible via 13 circular cycle routes that suit every fitness level. Sights along the way include the historic old town of Isny , with its many church spires and watchtowers, and Bad Wurzach , with its baroque castle and the St. Gallus church on the Winterberg. And between the two, a cheese or farm shop invites you to enjoy a hearty snack.
Lakeland Oder-Spree: sport lover or late riser?
East of Berlin, the Lakeland Oder-Spree district advertises its 'late riser tours'. One thing is for sure: these eleven cycle routes are all about relaxed pedalling. And because the focus is on enjoyment, you can take your pick from various picnic options on your way. However, the region's many lakes, rivers and forests make this also ideal for sporting activities – and culture lovers can also choose their perfect destination from the 90 marked cycle tours. The bridge routes along the German-Polish border river are also exciting.
HellwegBörde: from forests to floodplains
The colourful combination of different landscapes makes the Hellwegbörde in the Sauerland a particularly diverse cycling region: idyllic floodplains in the Lippe valley, fields and meadows in the Soester Börde, forests in the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park as well as charming villages and historic towns. Numerous themed routes , such as the sculpture cycle path 'Wegmarken' (English: Milestones), the Westphalian Salt Route or 'Steine und Mehr' (English: Stones and More) with stops at a diamond park and a lime kiln, connect the highlights. 'Bed and bike' accommodation, several repair stations and a bike bus completes the offer.
