Moselle wine-growing region – viniculture dating back 2,000 years
The Moselle, Saar and Ruwer Rivers meander through countryside where the Romans first cultivated wine 2,000 years ago. The Moselle region is the oldest wine-growing region in Germany and the largest with vines on steep slopes.
The south- or south-west-facing hillsides provide a favourable microclimate for the vines and rare animals. As a result, the elegant Riesling wines cultivated in the vineyards near the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer Rivers are amongst the finest white wines in the whole world. They are renowned for their depth of flavour yet relatively low alcohol content and are best enjoyed at the height of summer.
Elbling is a speciality cultivated in the Moselle region and this native grape variety is believed to have first been grown by the Romans.
Main grape varieties: Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Elbling, Kerner, white Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Dornfelder
