Franconia wine-growing region – tradition with a modern twist
Goethe is believed to have gushed about his favourite tipple: "Send me some more Würzburg wine as no other kind will do." Franconia is one of the most modern wine-growing regions of the moment, producing fine wines that are appreciated all around the world and boasting state-of-the-art wine architecture.
Müller-Thurgau, the most common grape variety found in Franconia, is undergoing a major revival amongst young wine-growers in the region in particular. Tasting sessions are available, for example, in local wine cellars, which are usually stylish and ultra-modern additions to traditional wine-growing estates with plenty of space and a fun vibe. A leisurely trip along the River Main Cycle Route offers a fascinating insight into the countryside dotted with no end of historical villages. Hikers are treated to spectacular views as they make their way along the panoramic tracks on foot.
Main grape varieties: Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner, with Bacchus as a regional speciality
