Passion Play Oberammergau
The 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play ended on 2 October 2022 after 110 performances with around 450,000 visitors from all over the world and more than four years of preparation.
The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play begins almost 400 years ago in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years' War, after months of suffering and dying from the plague, the people of Oberammergau vowed to perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years.
At Whitsun 1634, they fulfilled the promise for the first time. By the middle of the 18th century, spectators from all parts of Germany were coming to Oberammergau, attracted by the great power and charisma of the play. Today, the Oberammergau Passion Play is regarded as one of the most important religious and cultural events in Germany.
Following the 10-year rhythm, the 42nd Passion Play would have taken place in 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Passion Play was successfully staged in 2022.
More than 2,400 local amateur actors, singers and musicians, almost half of the villagers, brought the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the world in a five-hour performance on the impressive open-air stage of the Passion Play Theatre.
The next Passion Play will take place in 2030.
