The cultural programme includes, above all, wine and viticulture, the origins of which can be traced back to the 11th century. The Kelternplatz square with its seven historic wine presses in the centre of Metzingen's historic old town still bears witness to this wine-growing tradition. The listed ensemble of buildings forms the cultural centre of the town today. The wine-growing tradition is at home here.
Built to protect the large wine press trees that were once used to press the grapes, they now house a wine museum, vinotheque, library, weekly market and catering facilities. While the two open market presses fill the square with life during events, the Kalebskelter houses a modern library. On the second weekend of Advent, the Sieben Kelternplatz is transformed into a cosy Christmas village and on the Whitsun weekend, the square is home to numerous artisans who present their works for sale at the traditional artisan market.
Further traces of viticulture can also be found on the wine adventure trail in the vineyards of Metzingen. As the southernmost wine-growing municipality in the Württemberg wine region, Metzingen is both the beginning and the end of the Württemberg Wine Route and proudly bears the "Weinsüden Weinort" seal of approval from Tourismus Marketing GmbH Baden-Württemberg. On two interconnected circular trails, each 2.5 kilometres long, you get closer to the origin and character of the wines with every step: 50 information boards provide additional information about viticulture, geology and flora and fauna in the vineyard.
Varied outdoor activities await all outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers: both cyclists and hikers will find numerous excursion destinations in the UNESCO Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve. Along the way, you will not only encounter many natural and cultural highlights, but also magnificent viewing cliffs on the Albtrauf, which is up to 1,000 metres high and offers views of the Alb foothills, the Black Forest and as far as the Alps.
No other biosphere reserve in Germany offers such a variety of landscapes, in particular the structural richness of the forest and open land areas. Different geological conditions, varying climatic conditions and a long history of traditional land use are the reasons for this diversity.
In addition to the already certified hiking trails in the Swabian Alb, a further 21 new premium hiking trails have been created under the name "hochgehberge". These open up access to very different landscape formations such as forests, flower meadows, floodplain landscapes, rock formations, fields and hills. Depending on your personal preferences and fitness level, the "hochgehberge" offer hikers stages ranging from short to long. Numerous farms and restaurants in the hiking region invite you to savour regional products.
Those who prefer to explore the picturesque cultural landscape on two wheels will find the right cycling experience in the various quality and themed cycle paths of different lengths and levels of difficulty - whether by e-bike or classic bike, whether as a leisurely panoramic tour or a sporting challenge.
