All areas relevant for testing meet the quality criteria of the label "Accessibility certified - accessible for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users".

Some information on accessibility are listed below. For detailed information please see the evaluation report.

  • There are three marked parking spaces for people with disabilities (parking space size: 350 cm x 500 cm). The surface quality of the car park is easy to walk and drive on.
  • The path from the car park to the entrance is 105 m long. It is easy to walk and drive on.
  • The bus stop Gedenkstätte Esterwegen is 145 m away.
  • The building is steplessly accessible via a treshold of 1 cm.
  • Almost all evaluated rooms and facilities available to the guests are steplessly accessible at ground level. Exception: Door from Foyer to outdoor area is only accessible via a treshold of 2 cm.
  • All evaluated passageways/doors available to the guests are at least 95 cm wide.
  • The counter in the foyer is 110 cm high. There is another, equivalent communication possibility while in a sitting position.
  • The lockers are available in two heights.
  • External paths are at least 220 m wide and easy to walk and drive on and have a maximum longitudinal gradient of up to 3 %.
  • Seating is not available on the outside area as wel as in the exhibition.
  • The exhibits are predominately visible when seated. The information on the exhibits is predominately readable when seated.
  • There are wheelchair accessible tables available in the café (maximum height 80 cm, wheelchair accessible at a height of 67 cm and a depth of 30 cm).
  • The controls of the vending machine in the cafeteria are 60 cm at the lowest point and 128 cm at the highest point.
  • Guided tours for people with walking impairments and wheelchair users are offered. A reservation in advance is necessary. The entire route of the guided tour is steplessly variable for wheelchair users. Mobile or fixed seats are available for people with walking disabilities, which may be used during the guided tour.

Public toilet for people with disabilities

  • The manoeuvring spaces are:
    in front of/behind the door 145 cm x 200 cm, in front of the toilet and the washbasin at least 150 cm x 150 cm;
    left and right of the toilet at least 90 cm x 70 cm.
  • There are grab rails available on the right and left of the toilet. The grab rails can be flipped-up.
  • The sink is wheelchair compatible.
  • The mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.
  • An alarm trigger is available.

  • The alarm is clearly visible in the following rooms: Foyer and Administration.
  • There is no audio induction loop system at the counter nor in the exhibition area.
  • The information on the exhibits/stations is predominately provided in writing.
  • There is audible information on the exhibits/stations in the exhibition area.
  • Information on the exhibits is displayed photo realistically.
  • Technical possibilities of information for people with hearing impairment/deaf people: Multi-Media / Audio-Guides, movies.
  • In the cafeteria there are tables with bright and glare-free lighting, on which there are no lamps standing or hanging that interfere with the field of vision or eye contact.
  • There is no seating area with low background noises (e.g. corner seating, separate room).
  • Guided tours are offered for people with hearing impairment, but not for deaf people. A reservation in advance is necessary.

  • Assistance dogs are allowed in relevant areas/rooms. If a group with assistance dogs want to visit the memorial site, registration in advance is required.
  • External paths usually have visually contrasting or tactilely detectable sidewalk boundaries.
  • The entrance is visually rich in contrast and recognizable by a tactile change of floor covering.
  • All evaluated and usable areas for the guest are well illuminated, i.e. bright and glare-free.
  • The signage is designed in clearly legible and contrasting font.
  • There are obstacles, e.g. objects protruding into the path/room: In the foyer, the exhibition board "Lager Esterwegen" (aerial photograph) is located in the middle of the room on the running axle.
  • There are glass doors without safety markings.
  • The exhibits/stations are usually well illuminated. The information on the exhibits/stations is predominately provided in writing and is visually rich in contrast.
  • Guided tours are offered for people with visual impairments, but not for blind people. A reservation in advance is necessary.
